Students will conceptualize organic shape and apply those ideas to their composition as they plan and make arrangements.

Students will develop artistic ideas, taking inspiration from shapes and forms encountered in everyday life and incorporating this into their compositions.

Pocket Folders (For storing cut pieces in between classes)
ASSESSMENT

Exit Ticket Strategy used to assess student comprehension of organic shape.

Exit Ticket Strategy used to assess student’s process of thought surrounding trial and error and making and changing plans.
ACTIVITY
-
Students will listen to read aloud of Matisse’s Garden by Samantha Friedman. Then we will discuss what occurred in the story, with a special focus on what and where Artist Henri Matisse took inspiration from.

We will review the concept of organic shape and discuss where we see organic shape in our everyday life. Students will be asked to consider what types of organic shapes they envision in their pieces.

We will review a slide show of cut paper collage pieces by Henri Matisse.

The teacher will demonstrate the safe handling of scissors as they are used to cut organic shapes.

Students will work independently to cut out organic shapes and plan a composition using these pieces. Once students have laid out their pieces and are satisfied with their plan, they will attach it with glue.
