Endangered Animal Silkscreen Prints

Students explore social justice and animal rights by using their art as a tool to communicate a message. 

ENDURING UNDERSTANDING

Students will understand that art is a tool that can be used to comment on social issues.

NATIONAL STANDARDS

  1. VA:Cn10.1.IIa: Utilize inquiry methods of observation, research, and experimentation to explore unfamiliar subjects through artmaking. 

  2. VA:Re.7.2.IIa: Evaluate the effectiveness of an image or images to influence ideas, feelings, and behaviors of specific audiences. 

  3. VA:Cr2.1.IIa Through experimentation, practice, and persistence, demonstrate acquisition of skills and knowledge in a chosen art form. 

OBJECTIVES

  1. Collect information through research, observation, and experimentation that supports their exploration of unfamiliar subjects and artmaking. 

  2. Engage in inquiry-based discussion and analyze relevant master artwork, exemplars, and peer work, demonstrating thoughtful understanding of artistic language.  

  3. Develop technical skills through persistence and practice of art-making concepts. 

MATERIALS NEEDED

  1. Printmaking Paper 

  2. Watercolor Paints and Brushes 

  3. Silkscreens

  4. Squeegee

  5. Transparent Base Ink 

ASSESSMENT 

  1. Pre-Test to assess prior student learning regarding planning and creating a composition, and understanding of color mixing with watercolor paints. 

  2. Exit ticket strategy on used to assess students' ability to plan and sequence independently. 

  3. Quick write strategies will be used to assess students' thought processes regarding the connection between art-making and real-world issues. 

  4. Unit reflection and self-assessment will be used to assess students' thought processes, use of vocabulary, and comprehension of learning concepts for the unit. 

  5. Formal Rubric Assessment.  

ACTIVITY

  1. Students will observe and discuss master artworks from a variety of artists, including screen printers and environmental artists. 

  2. Students will independently research endangered species and select an animal to be the focal point of their project. 

  3. Students will draft and plan a composition regarding their selected endangered animal. 

  4. Students will engage in an experimental artmaking process, which combines watercolor painting and silkscreen printmaking.
